The competitions and celebrations will be taking place at the Asia Pacific Choir Games and Grand Pix of Nations Colombo, from October 21st -28th, 2017.   This year’s festival will feature three competitions, each of which will have 10 categories for participants to compete under.  Choirs from all over the Asia Pacific region, regardless of their present level of achievement, will have the opportunity to participate in the Open Competition.  Choirs with international competitive experience will participate in the Asia Pacific Champions competition and choirs that have competitive experience in international choral competitions, will compete against each other at the Grand Prix Nations.

All competitions will take place at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre and the Lionel Wendt Theatre from 9.00a.m-9.00p.m and are open free of charge to the public.

Choral music over the years has become a great tool in bringing nations together, people from different walks of life and different cultural backgrounds, uniting them all through music and song.  Sri Lanka for the first time in 2004 participated in the choral competition in Wales, and was placed first runners up when competing with the rest of the world.

Since then, we have seen Sri Lanka participate at the word choir games and other choral competitions in the Asia choir Games and performing really well, emerging champions and gold medal winners. Unfortunately these opportunities have been available  to very few choral groups, and musicians due to the lack of prominence given to the music and the Arts.

This time however we have been successful in bringing the Asia Pacific choir games to Sri Lanka. This event is owned and organised by INTERKULTUR, the largest organiser of choral music and competition based in Germany.

The games are held every two years, and  in the past, been held in Indonesia and Korea. This is the second largest choral event in the world, the first being, the World Choir Games. Croatia, Iran, Indonesia, Thailand, Latvia, Russia China and of course our local choirs will be performing. Sri Lanka has never witnessed before a celebration where all the above countries will come together.  We will have experts from all over the world that will be judging the competitions, which will certainly be a learning experience for us all.  This event will bring together nations in choral harmony.  It will not only bring economic benefits to the country, but also educational benefits as well.  This is not just a showcase, it will also bring about the unique cultural gathering of the countries around the world, especially the Asia Pacific region through the media, to the rest of the country and the world.

Two special celebration concerts featuring international choirs will take place on the 22nd & 26th October 2017 at Temple Trees and Nelum Pokuna respectively. Tickets for these two events will be available on ticketslk.com from the 10th of October.

There will be an exciting street parade featuring all participating choirs on the evening of Wednesday, 25th October, starting from Nelum Pokuna going around the Viharamahadevi Park, back to a fun filled carnival atmosphere to end the celebrations at Nelum Pokuna premises. The general public is invited to view this multi-cultural costume parade.

Friendship Concerts will take place at the ‘Fairway Centre Stage’ at the Nelum Pokuna premises daily at 5.00pm, and also at St. Mary’s Church, Bambalapitiya featuring sacred music on the 23rd & 26th of October. Participating choirs will share the musical traditions of their native lands at these events, which are open to the public free of charge.
