Central Expressway:

By Yohan Perera

A group of UNP and SLFP ministers are due to meet the Prime Minister to urge him to go ahead with the Pothuhera-Kandy stretch of the Central Expressway,  sources said yesterday.

Ministers Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, S B Navinna and Anura Priyadharshana Yapa are slated to meet the PM to make such a request, according to sources close to the Prime Minister.

They are of the opinion that people in the Kurunegala District in particular would benefit greatly from this phase of the project.

It was reported earlier that Minister of Highways and Higher Education Lakshman Kiriella and Minister of Sports Dayasiri Jayasekera had got into an argument with regard to work on Central Expressway with the latter of the opinion that funds for this project should not be borrowed at high interest rates as there were other more pressing development projects that should be given priority.

In reply Minister Kiriella had said that whatever others may say the construction of the Central Expressway was a necessity and the work on it would not be stopped for any reason.
