Over 2,200 killed within 9 months

A total of 2,228 persons were killed in 2,116 road accidents across the country from January to September this year, police said.  


Police spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said the majority of fatal accidents were due to motorcycles and 711 motorcycle riders were killed this year.  

A total of 681 pedestrians, 316 passengers, 204 cyclist and 174 drivers were killed in those accidents.  

According to police statistics, a total of 25,410 road accidents were reported during the first eight months of this year. Police said 14,742 of those were caused by injuries and 8,875 accidents had caused damage to the vehicles.
