Megapolis and Western Development Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said a huge leisure and amusement park ten times the size of the Viharamahadevi Park will be built under the ‘Colombo Port City’ project that will cater to local and foreign tourists.

This will be a new concept in amusement parks providing all modern amenities, facilities and pleasure to children and adults alike in line of a green park.

“Our objective is not only to provide infrastructure, tax relief and lands for prospective big time investors who are willing to invest in the Port City, but also a clean and better environment to maintain their health and well being,” Minister Ranawaka added.

Meanwhile, the Megapolis and Western Development Ministry’s housing development arm, the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) will construct 25,000 houses between 2017 – 2020 for low income families living in unauthorized dwellings in the Colombo city, Minister Ranawaka said.

Addressing the media, Minister Ranawaka said construction of over 19,000 housing units had already commenced.

“The Divisaru Purawara’ project coming under the broader and massive ‘Port City Development Programme’ will transform the Western Province into a huge metro area and every inch of the land that comes under the programme will be fully developed, planned and reorganized. Therefore, it is essential that state lands occupied by shanties will have to be developed in a planned manner,” Minister Ranawaka said.

He said better housing with all basic facilities and infrastructure would be provided to every shanty dweller who would be evicted from their unauthorized structures.

Minister Ranawaka added that the lands surrounding the Beira Lake will also be developed parallel to the construction of the Port City, as the entire city of Colombo is a part of the mega smart city that will also be transformed into a financial, naval, air, IT and investment hub of the Indian Ocean between Singapore and Dubai.
Meanwhile, the NHDA has built a housing scheme at a cost of Rs. 763 million comprising 218 housing units at Henamulla, Madampitiya to provide housing for those evicted from unauthorized dwellings near Beira Lake. Another 941 houses will be built at the second phase for the same purpose.

The Henamulla housing scheme will be opened by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe next Monday (30).
