7 killed, 43 injured in bus tragedy

At least seven passengers were killed and 43 others injured when a bus travelling from Colombo to Jaffna toppled over at Madurankuliya in Puttalam last morning, Police said.  

They said the the tragedy had occurred when bus which was attempting to overtake a three-wheeler had skidded off the road, crashed into culvert and toppled over.  

Those living in the vicinity and the police managed to rescue the passengers trapped inside the bus. Three people travelling in the three-wheeler were also injured in the accident while the bus driver suffered minor injuries and was arrested by the Mundalama police.  

Those injured were admitted to the Puttalam, Mundalama and Chilaw Hospitals while some of them were later transferred to the Colombo National Hospital.  

Police said according to some of the onlookers, the bus was driven at high speed and might have been the cause of the tragedy.  

Those killed were identified as residents of Jaffna.
