Uva Wellassa freedom struggle

The Public Administration and Management Ministry is to condut several cultural events next year to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Uva-Wellassa freedom struggle or the Great 1817-1818 rebellion against the British Raj.   

Public Administration and Management Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara said quiz and painting competitions, the issuance of new stamps, the repairing of tanks and other development projects would be carried out to mark this occasion.   

 

 

 The President had in December last year named 19  leaders of the rebellion as national heroes and in March this year named  another 84 as national heroes by annulling the gazette  notifications that had been issued by the then British Government  declaring them as traitors

 

 

He said leaders of the Wellassa freedom struggle such as Kohombure Raterala, Bootawe Raterala, Bakinigahawela Adikarama, Mahabadulle Gammana Raterala, Bulupitiye Raterala would also be commemorated.   
President Maithripala Sirisena had in December last year named 19 leaders of the rebellion as national heroes and in March this year named another 84 as national heroes by annulling the gazette notifications that had been issued by the then British Government declaring them as traitors in the aftermath of the uprising. The 103 leaders declared as national heroes represented various parts of the country during that time.
