We know that Seven is a lucky number. But what if most things around you are based on this Lucky Number Seven? There are seven days of the week, seven colours of the rainbow, seven notes on a musical scale, seven seas and seven continents! So, what’s with this number Seven?

image_1510719610-ca61fba862It has been found that the number Seven has played a fascinating role in our lives through science, religion, mathematics, psychology and other concepts. Quite interestingly, seven is considered to be the Seeker, Thinker and the Searcher of Truth. In other words, it is a number of completeness and perfection.

Being a choreographic research interest of Umeshi Rajeendra, Founder and Artistic Director of Mesh Academy of Dance, her latest production ‘Seven : The Seeker. The Thinker’ showcased three investigative pieces based on this concept. At a first glance, one may not understand what the dancers are doing besides engaging in complex bodily movements. As it progressed, a combination of sinful human attitudes from craving to sexual inclinations was expressed with much energy. The act titled Zayin – the seventh letter in the Hebrew alphabet, highlighted how these attitudes change the nature of oneself over time including how society looks at a woman after getting raped.

Two other acts, Forward Motion and Seven in One explored Pluto’s seven principle directions all motion and the number seven in all aspects, respectively.

The production was done in collaboration with the Department of Drama, Oriental Ballet and Contemporary Dance, University of Visual and Performing Arts with music composed by Natasha Senanayake also featuring music by Max Richter as well.
