The Colombo Port City project (CPCP) is likely to use sand from the fishery harbour in Panadura that was blocked off by sand piling at its entrance, sources at the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources said yesterday.
It has been revealed that subject Minister Mahinda Amaraweera had visited the port which had suffered from excessive sand piling up at its entrance. The increasing piles of sand had prevented fishermen from entering and leaving the Port, it is learnt.

After a tour in the area, the Minister had directed a report be presented to the officials of the Colombo Port City project requesting the sand be removed and used for the construction of the project.

Officials said the move could not be timed better as the project company was facing a scarcity of the raw material needed for the project. “They have stopped taking sand from Colombo and its surrounding area and had to resort to getting sand from Negombo,” a source said.

A proposal was submitted to the CPCP and its officials have promised to look into the proposal and get back to the ministry after a discussion with high ranking officials of the project.
