LG Polls

By Sandun A Jayasekera

The SLFP will take note of all SLFP members campaigning against the party during the run-up to the local government elections and use such evidence to file action in Court with a view to expelling them from the party, Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said yesterday.

He said all SLFP members of the joint opposition contesting on the SLPP ticket under flower-bud symbol and those campaigning against the SLFP would be definitely expelled from the party and subsequently from their parliamentary membership.

The minister told the weekly news briefing at the SLFP headquarters that a special legal wing of the party would be round the clock during the LG polls to gather evidence about those found betraying the party.

“We will build a strong case against the betrayers. We want to file the evidence in Court and seek their expulsion from the SLFP and effectively from their parliamentary seats. We will deploy party supporters to gather audio and video evidence which is admissable in any court of law.

We have given enough and more opportunities to those betraying the SLFP, ridiculing and insulting it and its leader, President Maithripala Sirisena to return to the fold. If they are not prepared to do this we are ready to take legal action against all of them including the top leaders of the JO. Enough is enough,” the minister said.

He said the President was extremely patient and ready to forget and forgive.

“But to those who continue to harm the SLFP thinking they can hoodwink the party supporters and work against the party; this is the final opportunity to rethink, correct their mistakes and stop betraying the SLFP,” the minister said and added that the SLFP would not go to Court to loose the case but with enough evidence to sack the miscreants.

He said the SLFP Central Committee was determined to remove all saboteurs and enemies from the party and work towards winning the LG polls and general elections in 2020.
