LATE-CITY-DM-1-6Non-declaration of Assets:

By Yoshitha Perera

A Colombo Court yesterday imposed a fine of Rs. 1,000 on former Defence Ministry Monitoring MP Sajin Vass Gunawardena over the non-declaration of assets in 2011 and 2012.

The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court imposed the fine after Mr. Gunawardena pleaded guilty to charges in the corruption case filed by the Bribery Commission over the non-declaration of  assets and liabilities in 2011 and 2012 when he was serving as a Parliamentarian.According to the Assets and Liabilities Law, the Court has jurisdiction to impose a fine of Rs.1,000 or a one year jail term for a person found guilty to the charges.    Colombo Additional Magistrate Aruni Artigala imposed the fine of Rs.1,000 and directed that the accused would have to serve a one month jail term in default of payment.

This is the third time in Sri Lanka that a politician was convicted by a Court over an offence that came under the Declaration of Assets and Liabilities Law.
