Digamadulla district UPFA MP Sriyani Wijewickrama took her oaths as the State Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government before President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday. She was a member of the MEP in the joint opposition and recently met the President to extend her support to the policies enunciated by the President.

Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister Faiszer Musthapha was also present at the swearing-in ceremony and referring to the new appointment said he was without a deputy or a minister of state for more than eight months and that the appointment of Ms. Wijewickrama would make his job easier.

“My ministry has a widespread responsibility. Its work affects the entire population of 22 million and with the LG in February and PC polls in March we have added responsibilities. Therefore, this appointment is a timely move and gives officials of my ministry some respite,” the minister said.

He said he expected to transfer some of his responsibilities the newly-appointed state minister.
