The Executive Committee (EC) of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has decided not to extend the term of the Junior National Selection ‘Coordinators’ ahead of the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup which begins in New Zealand next month.

The  reliably learns from an SLC official, that with the term of the current coordinators ending on December 31, a decision has been taken to not offer them fresh contracts.

With there being no immediate commitments for the junior team after the World Cup, SLC will draw up a new list of candidates before appointing new coordinators, the official said.

It is also reliably learnt that the title of ‘National Selection Coordinators’ was given to the Junior National Selectors a few months ago so that the final selections for the Under-19 Asia Cup and the World Cup to be made by the National Selection Committee headed by Graeme Labrooy.

The   understands that this is a break away from tradition, where selections for the Under-19 Team were made by the Junior National Selectors, and no official written notification was given to the coordinators about the change in title.

Interestingly, the current ‘coordinators’ Ranjith Madurusinghe (Chairman), Ranjan Paranavithana, Nilantha Ratnayake and Gajaba Pitigala were appointed by former Sports Minister Naveen Dissanayake, before their initial term was extended by the SLC.

The extension was made ‘until further notice’ with no official intimation that the contract will end on December 31.

However, they were issued with a letter stating their term would end on that date.

SLC and the coordinators had not seen eye-to-eye regarding one particular selection, that of Ayana Siriwardena, who captained the Sri Lanka Under-19 Board President’s XI that played in the recent Under-19 Challenger Series in India.

Despite being recommended on some strong performances by the Junior National Selection Coordinators, the National Selection Committee had opted to go with another player Santhush Gunathilaka.

Meanwhile, Kamindu Mendis, who was reported to have suffered a hamstring injury in the run up to the World Cup, was passed fit by the National Selection committee and will lead the Under-19 Team at the World Cup.

The Sri Lanka Under-19 Squad: Kamindu Mendis (Captain), Dhananjaya Lakshan, Santhush Gunathilaka, Hasitha Boyagoda, Nawanidu Fernando, Nipun Dananjaya, Ashen Bandara, Kishan Sanjula, Nishan Madushka, Jehan Daniel, Praveen Jayawickrama, Haren Buddila, Thisaru Rashmika, Kalana Perera and Nipun Malinga.
