A search has been launched throughout yesterday to capture the Leopard, which is believed to have attacked some estate workers at the Panmure estate in Hatton.

The search was carried out by wildlife officers of Udawalawa and Nallathanniya forest range, police personnel and estate workers under the direction of Veterinary Surgeon Dr. Vijitha Perera.

The estate workers were tensed and fearful because of the delay in capturing the Leopard while wildlife officers were planning to trap it using a baited cage.   It is believed that endemic Leopards frequent the tea estates and on several occasions estate workers had poisoned them or caught them in improvised traps.

In recent times wildlife officers have attempted to drive them away into the forest reserves or wildlife sanctuaries.
