Mathews or Chandimal likely replacements

Sri Lanka’s limited over captaincy is to be handed over to either Angelo Mathews or Dinesh Chandimal while replacing Thisara Perera who was appointed to the position a little over a month ago.

Mathews is reportedly primed to take over but with injuries debilitating him over the last 18 months the National Selectors are also considering Chandimal, despite not having cemented a place in either of the limited over teams.

The decision would come down to who fit best with the team’s strategy leading into next year’s ICC Cricket World Cup, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) President Thilanga Sumathipala said yesterday.

“Given the change of Head Coach and the current form of the team, we need to plan ahead for the 2019 Cricket World Cup, and with that in mind we have made this decision,” Sumathipala said.

The announcement is to be made on January 9, in the lead up to the team’s departure for a Triangular ODI series in Bangladesh, also involving Zimbabwe.

Sri Lanka has cycled through four different ODI captains since Mathews stepped down as the skipper across all three formats in July last year, with Perera being the most recent of them.

Perera took over the captaincy of Sri Lanka’s T20I Team from Upul Tharanga for the three-match series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), after the veteran opener refused to travel to Lahore, Pakistan for the last of those matches, and was subsequently replaced by the former ahead of the limited over series against India last month.

Perera oversaw an end to Sri Lanka’s 12 ODI losing streak before his team suffered a heavy 1-2 and 0-3 defeat in the ODI and T20I series respectively.
