The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) said yesterday it had suspended the licence of the private helicopter pilot, who had lost his way to the Palali airport when transporting Minister Mahinda Amaraweera for a Thai Pongal ceremony.

The pilot is reported to have failed to locate the runway on Sunday and had been airborne for more than 45 minutes.

The minister had requested the Air Force for assistance and had returned to Colombo on a routine SLAF flight yesterday morning from Palali.  CAASL Additional Director General Athula Jayawickrama told Daily Mirror that the Authority suspended the license of the pilot pending investigation.

He said the CAASL was conducting an investigation into the incident and would take a decision thereafter.
