Sri Pada pilgrimage:

Twenty-nine young men on a trip to Sri Padastana, who had Kerala ganja in their possession, were taken into custody by Police during raids on the Sri Pada route.

They were produced before Hatton Acting Magistrate Damayanthi Fernando and remanded till today.


Raids had been carried out by Hatton, Watawala and Ginigathnena Police with the help of the Kennel Division of the Hatton Police. Hatton Division Anti-Vice Squad arrested 22 suspects and Ginigathhena and Watawala police seven suspects.


The Police said the suspects were from Colombo, Hanwella, Pilimathalawa, Maharagama, Horana, Avissawella and Kalutara. The suspects were aged between 20 and 30 years.


A Senior Police Officer said the public awareness campaigns had been launched to prevent the use of liquor or any other intoxicant during the pilgrimage to Sri Pada and that the raids were being carried out by several Police teams round the clock.
