Court rejects Gota’s request to be discharged

The Colombo High Court yesterday dismissed the petition, filed by ex-defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and seven others, requesting to be released from the Avant-Garde case filed by the Bribery Commission in the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court. 

DM_20180203_A001-4Mr. Rajapaksa and seven other defendants requested the High Court via a revision petition, challenging the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s decision which rejected the preliminary objections raised by them on the 
Avant-Garde case.   

The Bribery Commission on August 31, 2016, filed a case in the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court against former defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Avante Garde Chairman Nissanka Senadipathi and six others on charges of corruption under the Bribery Act.  
The BC said the suspects had committed an offence by permitting the Avant Garde Maritime Services to operate a floating armoury causing a Rs.11.4 billion loss to the government.  

The other six suspects are — Sujatha Damayanthi, Palitha Piyasiri Fernando, Karunaratne Bandara Adhikari, Somathilaka Dissanayake, Jayanath Sirikumara Colambage and 
Jayantha Perera.
