Last rites on Thursday

Viharadhikari of the Bellanwila Raja Maha Vihara, Maligawatta historic temple in Attidiya, Anunayake of the Kotte Sri Kalyani Samagri Dharma Maha Sangha Sabha and Chancellor of the Sri Jayawardenapura University Ven. Prof. Bellanwila Wimalarathana Thera, who met with an accident at the temple premises, passed away on Saturday (03) at a private hospital in Colombo.  

The doctors confirmed that the Ven. Thera died of a heart failure, which he developed after he underwent an urgent surgery.  


Ven. Thera’s cremation will take place at the Sri Jayawardenapura University playground at 3 p.m. on Thursday, February 08.  


Born at Weedagama in Bandaragama on April 14, 1942, and named as Omaththage Gilbert Perera, he had his primary education at Nikape Junior School and Piliyandala Madya Maha Vidyalaya. In 1956 at the age of 13, he entered the order as Ven. Bellanwila Wimalarathana at the Bellanwila Raja Maha Vihara under the tutelage of Ven. Bellanwila Somarathana Thera.   As a novice monk Ven. Wimalarathana Thera was educated at the Molligoda Pravachanodaya Pirivena and Ratmalana Paramadhammachetiya Pirivena and graduated from Kelaniya Vidyalankara University and later from Vidyodaya University. Ven.Wimalarathana Thera received his PhD in 1980 and 1st Class Honours in Pali from Sabaragamuwa University and Sri Lanka Buddhist and Pali University followed by several honorary degrees.  


Ven. Bellanwila Wimalarathana Thera, who started his career as a teacher of the Sunetra Devi Pirivena in Pepiliyana was soon destined to be the Head of the Ratmalana Paramadhammachethiya Pirivena.  


In 1966 he joined Sri Jayewardenepura University as a lecturer and in 1996 he was elevated to the position of professor. After his retirement in 2006 Ven. Thera was honoured with the post of Chancellor of the Sri Jayawardenapura University which he held until his sudden demise on Saturday (03).   Ven. Thera had held several senior positions in the Sangha Sasana as Member of the Karaka Sangha Sabha of the Kotte Sri Kalyani Samagri Dharma Maha Sangha Sabha, as its secretary and Anunayake.   A scholar Buddhist monk who was well versed in Sinhala and English languages had authored several works on Buddhism and Buddhist culture.
