It was former President Mahinda Rajapaksa who had asked Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe not to resign under pressure from various quarters following the just concluded LG polls results, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said.

Addressing the weekly cabinet news briefing he said yesterday that President Maithripala Sirisena also has not exerted any pressure on Mr. Wickremesinghe on any matter.

“However, the government has decided to review its performance in the last two and half years and see where it went wrong to suffer an election defeat. The first big reform will come in the form of a cabinet reshuffle expected in the next couple of days,” Minister Senaratne said.

He said Law and Order and Southern Development Minister Sagala Ratnayaka expressed his willingness to resign from the Law and Order portfolio on which negative comments had been made on its performance by many in recent times.   Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayaka is likely to get a cabinet portfolio at the reshuffle, he added.
