UNF Parliamentary group decides to continue with unity govt.

The United National Front (UNF) Parliamentary Group yesterday decided to continue with a unity government with certain changes in ministries and new strategies, UNP General Secretary Kabir Hshim said yesterday.

   Mr Hashim told media personnel that the unity government would continue but would go along with a new set of goals and objectives to strengthen it further.   


“ We have decided to change the composition of the government although it will we headed by President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe,” he said   


He said the group decided that the UNP should be re organized and it would not be postponed. “The UNP changes will be in accordance with the demands of the country,” he said.   


However he said “If anyone else manages to show a majority, we will come up with a decision in such a situation.”  


Minister Gayantha Karunatileke said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe explained to the parliamentary group on the progress of the discussions he had with President Sirisena. He said the decision was made to reform the UNP and the unity government within a week.   


Minister Daya Gamage also expressed similar sentiments.   


UNP MP Hesha Withanage said some SLFP MPs would leave the government while others would remain. He said the Prime Minister assured that young people in the party would be given a greater role to play.

MP Chaminda Wijesiri said the government should implement all the promises given to the people in 2015.   


UNP MP Nalin Bandara Jayamaha said his earlier statement that the UNP would form a government on its own was only his personal opinion.   


MP Kavinda Jayawardene also expressed similar sentiments on the unity government as told to the media that President Sirisena had informed UNF leaders that he was willing to continue with the unity government. He said the UNP would undergo changes and the National Youth Front would come up with proposals to reform the UNP soon.
