Residents living along a byroad which leads to the Karadiyana garbage dump and recycling center yesterday complained that the road, a scene for passersby to frequently dump garbage along, was only cleared out when high ranking officials or politicians came to visit.

CITY-DM-4-8Frustrated residents said they had complained on numerous occasions about the garbage dumped in a haphazard manner along the road but authorities took no notice of it.

When the matters was reported on the Daily Mirror on a previous occasion, it was learnt that butchers in the area often dumped residues in polythene bags which attracted the crocodiles from the Bolgoda Lake.

“The crocodiles eat everything including the polythene bags. This is harmful to them as well as the marine environment in the area,” they pointed out.

In addition to the complaint of dangerous animals lingering in the area, residents also said that if not cleaned the roads were impossible to walk because of the garbage dumped in the area.
“When the issue is brought up in the media they clean up the area, but this too dies down after several days. We can’t even send our kids out to play because we are too afraid of the crocodiles that come to the area,” residents said.

Numerous committees had been appointed to look into those dumping garbage and ensure the issue does not resurface. However, residents complaint that no measures have been taken to resolve their issues and that it was difficult to face these obstacles on a regular basis.
