The political tsunami that swept the country in the aftermath of the LG polls result is in the past and President Maithripala Sirisena would be overseeing the second Cabinet reshuffle of the ‘Yahapalana Government’ formed between the UNP and the SLFP which takes place today (22), Cabinet spokesman, Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said.

Minister Senaratne added that it was natural that Cabinet changes, political reforms and policy diversions are made after a mid term poll in any Parliamentary democracy and this was happening at present, which was perfectly normal.

Minister Senaratne, addressing the weekly Cabinet news briefing said yesterday that there was a concerted effort by the joint opposition to change the government soon after the LG polls results were announced and it had failed miserably. Following this there were covert attempts to change the Cabinet and replace Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe with an SLFP minister. That also was a total flop.   “The joint UNP – SLFP ‘Yahapalana Government’ will continue unscathed but there will be a Cabinet reshuffle today, if not definitely tomorrow. All these developments will take place smoothly and I appeal to all concerned not to attempt to disrupt this process because they will flop. Besides, if uncertainty remains in the governance of the country it does good to no one,” Minister Senaratne stressed.
Responding to a journalist, Minister Senaratne admitted that issues had emerged within the UNP after the results of the LG election were announced but this was understandable as we are talking about a huge entity.

Responding to another question asked by a journalist, Minister Senaratne said SLFP ministers have much to say to the media both with regards to the ‘Yahapalana Government’ and Prime Minister Wickremesinghe, but are silent during Cabinet meetings to discuss these matters.

“The understanding between the UNP and the SLFP with regard to the ‘Yahapalana Government’ will continue till 2020. All decisions of government will be taken by President Sirisena and Prime Minister Wickremesinghe collectively,” he stressed.
