Weerasinghe inspires Navy into Clifford Cup final

Navy Sports Club full back Thilina Weerasinghe inspired his team to a crucial 28-26 victory over the last year runners-up Havelock Sports Club in their Dialog Clifford Cup Knock-Out Rugby Tournament semi-final encounter worked off at the Race Course Grounds in Reid Avenue yesterday.  


The winners collected their points from one try, two goals and three penalties while the Havies responded with one try and three goals.


Havelock SC hooker Asmin Fajudeen made their way gradually into the game as they took the lead in the 15th minute of the game. Riza Mubarak added the extras for Havelock SC to lead 7-0 at that stage.


Five minutes later Navy SC prop forward Charith Silva scored the first try when he barged over mid right. Thilina Weerasinghe converted to equalize the scores 7-7. 


Thereafter, Navy SC wing three quarter Chathura Gomas made a break and ran round to score his first try. Thilina missed the conversion. 


Two minutes before half time Havelock SC hooker Fajudeen scored another five points for the home side. Riza failed to convert the try.

Two minutes after the second half Navy SC full back Thilina Weerasinghe put over a 22 metre penalty to make it 15-12.


Four minutes later, it was Weerasinghe’s turn to level the scores after they were awarded a penalty, following a late tackle on Shehan Dias. Navy SC led 18-12.


Navy SC increased their lead when Chathura Silva dived over for a try near the left corner flag and Weerasinghe made the conversion for Navy SC to grab the lead 25-12.


Navy SC suffered a major setback when star player Raveen de Silva was handed a yellow card.   


image_1519240111-45bf0b1874In the 67th minute Havelock SC number eight Lasidu Karunathilaka scored another five points for the home side and the conversion was successfully made by Mubarak. Navy SC led 25-19 at that stage.


Four minutes later, Havelock SC scored their fourth try through flanker Gihan Madusanka who touched down mid left. The conversion was successfully made by Mubarak. 


Havelock SC took the lead for the first time in the match 26-25. 


However, in the last minute of the game Referee Les Cash from England awarded a penalty for Navy SC and Weerasinghe obliged to give his side an exciting victory in the end 28-26.
