The Wennappuwa Police Division ASP was nabbed by the Bribery Commission yesterday on charges of soliciting a bribe of Rs.40,000 from a female Spa-owner to turn a blind eye over its future operations.

The ASP is said to have phoned the woman yesterday asking her to come with the money to a certain location on the Divulapitiya Road saying he was on his way to Colombo

A special team from the Investigation Division of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption arrested the ASP while accepting the money from the complainant on the Divulapitiya-Negombo Road.

Commission’s Investigation Division Director SSP Priyantha Chandrasiri told Daily Mirror a woman who owned the Ayurvedic massage parlour had lodged complaint last week about an ASP in charge of Wennappuwa area.  The ASP had reportedly demanded a sum of Rs.40,000 from the woman saying that the operations of the massage parlour would be allowed to continue unhindered in the future.  The woman who had arranged to hand over the agreed amount of money had subsequently complained to the Bribery Commission.

The ASP is said to have phoned the woman yesterday asking her to come with the money to a certain location on the Divulapitiya Road saying he was on his way to Colombo.  The officer who came in a private vehicle in civies was caught red handed by the bribery sleuths while accepting money from the woman.  The ASP identified as Daya Deshapriya Jayathilaka Bandara was produced in the Negombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
