The government has decided to use the regional and cooperative network of the Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) to purchase the paddy harvest from the ‘Maha’ season and make the purchases directly through the District Secretaries.

The cabinet approval was granted last week to Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera to make arrangements to purchase the bumper paddy harvest from the ongoing ‘Maha Season’ through the District Secretariats.

“After reviewing the status of the previous paddy purchasing programmes, it was decided to purchase paddy through the District Secretaries as had been done previously as it was realized that the PMB was inactive to make the process sustainable as it is more transparent and accountable. Further, it was decided to purchase only Nadu paddy,” Minister Samaraweera told the cabinet in his memo.
It was revealed that the paddy harvesting has started in the districts of Ampara, Batticaloa, Killinochchi, Trincomalee and Puttalam and paddy purchasing is being carried out by the private sector at a price range of Rs.40 to Rs.42 a kg., for Samba paddy and Rs.29 to Rs.35 a kg for Nadu paddy with moisture levels above the standard level of 14%.

However, the regional network of the PMB and the Cooperatives are to be used for the paddy purchasing.

Accordingly, the District Secretaries were instructed to make requests to the General Treasury as soon as the farmers encounter any issue on the sale of Nadu paddy in order to provide the required funds for paddy purchase.

Only Nadu paddy from the areas where there is a need for government intervention to ensure the maintenance of the guaranteed price. To purchase such paddy through the District Secretaries! Government Agents using the regional network of the Paddy Marketing Board and the Cooperative societies.

The Treasury will provide funds to Government Agents/ District Secretaries to purchase the paddy.
