Kandy peaceful no curfew: Police

Considering the peaceful situation in the Kandy District, the curfew would not be re-imposed in the Kandy Administrative District, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekera said yesterday.  


A total of 465 houses, business establishments and vehicles were destroyed and damaged

He said that the decision had been taken after reviewing the security situation in the affected areas. Initially, a police curfew was imposed in the Kandy Administrative District since March 5 following the tense situations in several areas in Kandy and the curfew was imposed at several times each day since March 5 until Saturday (10) evening.  

SP Gunasekera said the situation in Kandy was improving, however, the Police Special Task Force (STF) and security forces will be kept deployed in the area to ensure security and maintain law and order. At least 161 suspects have been arrested in connection with violence in Kandy since March 4.  

Meanwhile, two students who were arrested by the CID for publishing statements on the internet promoting hatred between the communities were ordered to be detained at the Makola Youth Detention Centre till March 22, after being produced in the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court yesterday.  

The suspects were residents of Minuwangoda and Homagama.  

A total of 465 houses, business establishments and vehicles were destroyed and damaged by the violence.  

Meanwhile, SP Gunasekera said an incident was reported in Anamaduwa, where a hotel was damaged in a fire. 

Another incident was also reported in Aluthgama, in which a minor damage was caused to a house using a petrol bomb.  

Meanwhile, President Maithripala Sirisena said he would appoint a three-member Commission to look into the violent incidents that took place in Kandy.
