Seeduwa Police Crimes Branch Officer-In-Charge was nabbed by the Bribery Commission sleuths yesterday for allegedly soliciting a sum of Rs.25,000 from a merchant to act on a complaint lodged by the latter.

The Crimes OIC was taken into custody by a special Bribery Commission team around 1.10pm yesterday afternoon whilst accepting the cash at the car park of the Seeduwa Police Station.

A commission’s spokesman said a merchant in Katunayake area recently had lodged a complaint with the Seeduwa Police Crimes Branch to act against an individual over a personal dispute.

The Inspector who was in charge of the branch had asked for Rs.25,000 from the complainant to act favourable on him and arrest the said individual.

The merchant who felt disturbed by this request had agreed to pay the sum on an agreed date but had subsequently complained to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.

In addition to the demanded sum of money the Crimes OIC had also taken a bottle of imported Vodka from the merchant to help him in the case.

The suspect identified as IP Ashoka Weerathilaka was to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Courts yesterday.

The investigations are being carried out on the instructions of Director Bribery Commission Investigation Division SSP Priyantha Chandrasiri.
