The joint opposition yesterday urged the government to hold the elections without delay to the North-Central, Eastern and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils, which were dissolved in October last year.

JO parliamentary group leader MP Dinesh Gunawardane said the three PCs were being administered by the provincial governors and the polls for the PCs were supposed to be held before March 31.

“The Provincial Councils (Amendment) Bill was passed in Parliament last year and the Delimitation Report submitted to Parliament but there are no signs of holding the elections to the three PCs. The government should make a statement as to when it is going to hold the elections,” he told a news briefing and reiterated that the term of three other PCs — the Central, Northern and North Western would expire in September and therefore urged the government to declare its stance on holding the elections.
