Police said legal action would be taken against the Ekala garment factory management after 50 more workers, said to have inhaled a poisonous gas, were yesterday admitted to the Gampaha and Ragama Hospitals.

The police had instructed the factory management to close the factory on Monday until the gas leak was fixed

Forty seven workers of the same factory were admitted to hospital on Monday.   Ja-Ela Police who are investigating the incident had found that the workers were hospitalized due to a gas leak inside the factory, following which the police had instructed the factory management to close the factory on Monday until the gas leak was fixed.

However, despite these instructions, the management had continued operations resulting in 50 more workers falling ill after inhaling the gas.   Police said the management was instructed to keep the factory closed until March 22, on a court order from the Negombo Magistrate’s Court and said legal action would be taken against the factory management for acting in a negligent manner.
