Untitled-2The Art of the Violin’ an evening of enchanting classical music was presented by The Chamber Music Society of Colombo (CMSC) on the 17th of March at the Lionel Wendt Theatre. This was a one of kind concert which showcased an amazing collection of virtuoso violinists headed by the global superstar Midori, internationally hailed as one of the foremost violinists of the world today.

This was the final phase of the ‘Midori Violin Studio Project’. The team headed by Midori along with a pianist and eight of her students went round the island educating interested individuals, conducting workshops and masterclasses, and engaging with music students and teachers.

When Midori performed the Sonata in B minor for Violin and Piano with Jiyahi Shi accompanying her on the piano, there was pin drop silence and the audience was spellbound. The amazing performance of these violinists brought out much emotion in the audience. One of the highlights was the brilliant Octet for Violins, ‘Gran Turismo’ composed by Los Angeles based Andrew Norman, Musical America’s 2017 Composer of the Year which was led by Moni Simeonov a native of Bulgaria who’s been playing the violin since he was five years old.
