He said when a vote was called for the SLPP Mayoral candidate had got a majority as a result of their party members, who went against party orders and voted for his victory.

Minister Abeywardane, who is the UNP leader for the Galle District, said that it was a grave mistake on the part of the Muslim members to vote in favour of the SLPP candidate after being elected on the UNP ticket.

He said, “Seven members who were elected on the UNP voted for the victory of SLPP candidate who contested for the mayoral post. They went against the decision taken by the party and as such we will hold an inquiry against them and take stern action in due course. According to the new election law, every voter casts their vote for the party. The candidates were elected according to the votes cast. Therefore, every member has to abide by the rules of the party. We had 18 members elected in total, 14 UNP, 3 UPFA and 1 UNFF member. There was an agreement with all of them to vote for the mayoral candidate chosen by us.”

He explained that the party had sent instructions to their members to work in collaboration with all other parties except for the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) to get their candidate Jilith Nishantha (UNP) as the Mayor of the council while Deshapriya Liyanage (UPFA) was to be his deputy.
