In the backdrop of confusions arising from the law governing the Local Government Elections, the Government has appointed a committee to look into the amendment of the Act that governs the elections to the Provincial Councils, it is learnt.

The committee is headed by Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Local Government and Provincial Councils S.A.D. Boralessa.

The Committee will study the technical aspects of the Provincial Councils Elections (Amendment) Act that provided for a new electoral system in similar line with the formula adopted for the local government elections concluded on February 10, 2018.

It created anomalies making it difficult for the political parties to form administrations in instances where there is not a single majority of more than 50 percent for any of them. In such cases, only the members elected to the local body concerned have to chair mayors, chairmen and their deputies at a ballot.
