Kurunegala MC elects its Mayor from the SLPP

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) gained control of the UNP controlled Kurunegala, Ratnapura and Badulla Municipal Councils yesterday.

SLPP member Thushara Sanjeewa Witharana was elected the Mayor of the Kurunegala Municipal Council at the secret ballot held yesterday while Sumith Udawasala of the same party was elected as the deputy chairman.
Sanjeewa Witharana obtained 11 votes at the secret ballot and Waruna Premarathne of the UNP obtained nine votes.


Sumith Udawasala of the SLPP was elected as the Deputy Mayor of the Kurunegala Municipal Council with 


10 votes. SLPP member A.M.Tiron Hirantha Attanayake, who obtained 12 votes, was elected the Mayor of the Ratnapura Municipal Council while UNP member M.A. Munasinghe, who obtained 13 votes, was elected the Deputy Chairman of the council.


Meanwhile, SLPP member Priyantha Amarasiri was elected as the Mayor of the Badulla Municipal Council with 12 votes while SLFP member Asitha Nalin was elected the deputy Mayor of the council. which did not command a majority in the Kurunegala MC during the recent Poll, however, gained control of the council after its member Thushara Sanjeewa Witharana was elected the Mayor at the secret ballot held yesterday. When the council met under the patronage of Wayamba Commissioner of Local Government R.P. Jayasinghe at the council meeting hall SLPP member Sanjeewa Witharana obtained 11 votes at the secret ballot and Waruna Premarathne of the UNP obtained 09 votes. Accordingly, Sanjeewa Vitharana was elected the Mayor of Kurunegala by a majority of two votes. For the post of Deputy Mayor Sumith Udawasala of the SLPP was elected after he obtained 10 votes.
At the recent polls, the UNP and the SLPP both obtained 08 seats each.


The JVP abstained from voting.


The newly elected Mayor and his deputy were given a rousing welcome by supporters and others opposite the Kurunegala Municipal Council.


Meanwhile, SLPP member A.M.Tiron Hirantha Attanayake was elected as the Mayor of the Ratnapura Municipal Council while UNP member M.A. Munasinghe was elected the Deputy Chairman of the council.
When a secret vote was taken to elect the Mayor, Mr Attanayake received 12 votes while UNP member Mr Munasinghe received 13 votes.


The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) members abstained from voting.
