A tense situation had been reported yesterday at the Maskeliya Pradeshiya Sabha during the ballot to elect the Chairman and Deputy Chairman.

The violence broke out after supporters of Minister Palani Digambaram accused the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) led by MP Arumugam Thondaman of forcible detaining and hiding of a female UNP member of the Pradeshiya Sabha as she was absent during the vote.

Police Special Task Force and several Police teams were deployed in and around the Pradeshiya Sabha building to control the situation.

Meanwhile, supporters of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) and the National Workers’ Union clashed in front of the Maskeliya Police Station after the vote. Both parties threw stones at each other.

CWC’s Shenbagavalli was nominated to the position of Chairperson of the Pradeshiya Sabha with the support of eight members from the CWC and an Independent Group.  She was elected to the position as no other names were nominated.

Periyasami Pradeepan of the UPFA was nominated to the position of Deputy Chairman. Of the 16 seats of the Maskeliya Pradeshiya Sabha, the UNP and CWC both occupy seven seats each while the SLPP and UPFA have one member each.
