Life-1-New-2Former president and MP Mahinda Rajapaksa hopes President Maithripala Sirisena will support the joint opposition-sponsored no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Indian Express reported on Sunday.

The motion was handed over to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya by the JO last week.

“It is now up to the President to ensure the victory of the motion by getting his SLFP members to support it,” Mr. Rajapaksa told reporters.

Mr. Rajapaksa said if Mr. Wickremesinghe was to be defeated when the motion was taken up for debate  on April 4, the JO would urge President Sirisena to dissolve Parliament and hold fresh elections.

Constitutionally, the current Parliament cannot be dissolved before February 2020 or requires a motion adopted with a two-thirds majority in Parliament to call for snap elections.
