Badulla District United National Party (UNP) MP Chaminda Wijesiri said that he was hoping to join other UNP backbenchers and move an impeachment motion against President Maithripala Sirisena.

.He said it was his personal view that an impeachment motion had to be brought against the President as he conveniently forgotten the mandate given to him on January 8, 2015.

“The President has been working against the mandate given by the people to administer the country jointly with the UNP. I am of the opinion that it was the President who should hold himself responsible for the defeat suffered by the government at the February 10 local government elections,” he said.

Mr. Wijesiri was confident that other UNP backbenchers would back him.

However, UNP Deputy General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said the party had not discussed any impeachment motion against the President.
