Hirantha to join 7’s squad today

Havelock centre Hirantha Perera is expected to join the Sri Lanka 7’s rugby squad today after granting clearance to represent Sri Lanka in the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

The former Isipathana back was not included in the national squad by the selectors initially, but with his club mate Sithum Peiris not being permitted to take part in the tournament, the Havelock number 12 received a last-minute call-up.
“Sithum Peiris did an exceptional job in the Borneo 7’s, so the selectors wanted him in the national squad for the Commonwealth Games, but he had not been included in the provisional squad for that particular tournament and hence we were not allowed to pick him for the Commonwealth Games which is why Hirantha Perera replaced him. However, since Hirantha was not in the squad that the selectors had picked, we had to get some clearances from the Commonwealth Games committee and I am happy that Hirantha is able to participate.
