A secret vote was not possible at tonight’s vote in Parliament on the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe according to Standing Orders, a senior Parliamentary official said yesterday.

“A secret vote can be requested only when the Speaker is elected and therefore it cannot be requested either by the joint opposition or the UNP for the subject being debated today,” he said.

The official said the voting that would be taken up at 9.30 p.m., would be conducted by calling the name of each sitting member by the Speaker and the result based on a simple majority taking into account the number of ‘yes or no’ votes of the members present at the time.
