2524The unique Sinhala – Hindu New Year festival, the ‘Mahanagara Suriyabhishekaya 2018’ was held round the clock on Sunday at the Independent Square in grand style drawing thousands of local and foreign visitors.

The festival was inaugurated by President Maithripala Sirisena on the invitation of Megapolis and Western Development Minister Champika Ranawaka at 7.00 in the morning.

The mega New Year festival organized by the Megapolis and Western Development Ministry gave an opportunity to Sri Lankan artistes, chefs, dancers, musicians and craftsmen to display and market their creations and products under one roof which will promote them among the masses.

Minister Ranawaka said the objective of the ‘Mahanagara Suriyabhishekaya’ was to popularise and promote traditional foods, music, dancing, customs, plays and equipment closely connected to the ‘Sinhala – Hindu New Year festival in the ancient times.

“We must preserve and protect our traditional and cultural customs, crafts and arts for the future generation. With the on going rapid urbanisation, those values are being forgotten and ignored. Our attempt is to revive those values to keep them in the public domain and preserve them for the generations to come,” Minister Ranawaka stressed.

The ‘Mahanagara Suriabhishekaya’ held for the first time was a public- private partnership. The Musical Show in the afternoon was inaugurated by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe while Speaker Karu Jayasuriya inaugurated the Cultural Show.
