Elephants at Dehiwela Zoo anointed for New Year

Anointing of elephants in the Dehiwala Zoo for the New Year took place at the auspicious time of 10.15a.m. yesterday on the instructions of the Director General of the Zoological Gardens  Dhammika Malsinghe.  


Chief Incumbent of the Galwadugoda Sri Wijayarama Temple in Galle Ven. Thalangalla Samitha Thera anointed the 75-year-old tusker “Bandula” first. A resident monk of the Dehiwala Buddhist Centre Ven. Udumalgala Piyananda Thera anointed the she elephant “Indi.”   


The ceremony was organised by the Deputy Director Anoma Priyadarshani, Assistant Director Dineshka Manawadu, Chief Veterinary Surgeon Madhusha Perera, Senior Controllers K.C. Kithsiri and Amitha Perera and the caretaker of the “Ali Eth Sevana” Upul Jayaratne.  


The staff of the zoo and a large number of visitors were present on the occasion.
