Former sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage was yesterday released on bail by the Colombo Fort Magistrate after submitting documentary evidence to prove his passport was in the custody of the Colombo High Court.

The FCID arrested him on Monday on charges of misappropriating Rs.39 million in government funds to buy carom and checker boards in 2014.

He was released on a cash bail of Rs.35,000 with two sureties of Rs.500,000 each after considering the submission made by his counsel who said the charges did not come under the Public Property Act.

The Court also imposed a travel ban on Mr. Aluthgamage and ordered him to handover his passport to Court. The Counsel told Court that his client’s passport was in the custody of the Colombo High Court where it was surrendered in a separate court case.

Although he was granted bail on Monday he was remanded because he was unable to fulfil the bail conditions imposed.
