Senior members of the United National Party (UNP) comprising members of the working committee and politburo are to meet on April 26 to make vital decisions on the future of the party, sources said yesterday.

A decision to call for a special meeting was made when the politburo members met at Temple Trees last evening according to party sources who explained that one of the key decisions to be taken at the upcoming meeting was the method of selecting suitable persons for key posts in the party. Some members of the politburo had proposed that a ballot should be held to select the General Secretary, National Organizer and Chairman.

State Minister Ajith P. Perera, who spoke to journalists after the meeting held yesterday (19), said that he had proposed that key positions within the party should be decided through a democratic process. While he did not go into details it was revealed that another method that had been proposed was a secret ballot.

However, another school-of-thought was that the post of general secretary as well as other posts should be filled using the same method as before with the party leader also having his say. The final decision on this is expected to be reached on April 26.   Informed sources further said that Minister Harin Fernando is likely to be appointed the Communications (propaganda) Secretary of the party.   It has also been proposed to appoint a full-time party secretary or an assistant secretary.
