  • Four men in two motorcycles opened fire

A 37-year-old man was killed and four others, including a pregnant woman were injured in a shooting incident at a musical show in Attanagalle on Saturday night. 

Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said four men arrived on two motorcycles had opened fire at the victims at around 10.50 pm during the show.   


Five persons who were injured in the shooting were admitted to the Wathupitiwala Hospital. The 37-year-old Rathna Devapriya, a soil businessman succumbed to gunshot injuries on the way to the hospital. One of the injured was later transferred to the National Hospital Colombo. The deceased was identified as a resident of Heiyantuduwa.   


SP Gunasekara said the main suspect of the shooting was identified as Chanaka Indrajith Jayasundara, a resident of Veyangoda. He was on bail over the death of underworld figure Udamvita Samare who was shot dead at the Veyangoda Railway Station on December 2016.

The Spokesman said the suspect, Chamara was bailed out over the murder in July last year. He was ordered to appear before the Veyangoda Police on each Sunday, however he had violated the bail conditions.   


SP Gunasekara said according to the primary investigations, the suspect had a business relationship with deceased Rathna Devapriya. But the deceased businessman had removed Chamara from his business because of money dispute. Police believed that the shooting was carried out as revenge.   


The Nittambuwa Police and the Crimes Division of the North Western Province are investigating the incident to arrest  the suspects.
