The Untied People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) worked hand in hand with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) to secure the mayoral post of the United National Party (UNP) – majority Hambantota Municipal Council.

Accordingly, UPFA’s Eraj Ravindra Fernando became the mayor once again. As the mayor during the previous term, he was accused of flaunting his pistol and threatening a group of UNP MPs on a fact finding mission to the Hambantota Port.

At the local government election conducted on February 10, the UNP got nine seats, the SLPP seven, the UPFA four seats and the JVP one.

In the ballot for the election of mayor, Mr. Fernando won the post.

He said he would conduct the inaugural session of the Council with the participation of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, former Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa and MP Namal Rajapaksa.
