Power and Renewable Energy Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya instructed relevant authorities to immediately evacuate some 700 residents of 114 families living at the Wekanda Housing Scheme in Stuart Street,  Colombo 2.
He made this instruction following a special discussion held on Wednesday over the dilapidated condition of the structure.

“According to a report issued by the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) in 2012, the said structure is facing the risk of collapsing. The ministry statistics state that apart from the 114 families, 36 families live in the scheme illegally. I will request the Cabinet to offer temporary shelters to these residents through the Disaster Management Ministry.

These poor residents should vacate the building immediately to prevent any danger to their lives,” he said.

Meanwhile, the residents said what the authorities wanted to do was to demolish the archaic building and construct a permanent shelter in the same compound.

Officials from the Colombo District Secretariat, Housing and Construction Ministry, DMC Ministry, Urban Development Authority and NBRO participated in the event.
