State patronage for Lester’s funeral tomorrow

President Maithripala Sirisena directed that the funeral of Sri Lanka’s doyen of Sinhala cinema and respected film-maker Dr. Lester James Peiris be held with State patronage.   

The funeral of Dr. Peiris will be held tomorrow at the Independence Square at 4.00 pm.   


He passed away on Sunday night at a private hospital in Colombo at the age of 99.   


Dr. Peiris celebrated his 99th birthday on April 5.   


President Sirisena, who attended the birthday celebrations commended the internationally- acclaimed film producer and film director for rendering immeasurable service to the growth of the Sri Lankan film industry.   


Film director, script writer, producer and filmmaker since 1949, Dr. Peries was involved in 28 films, including shorts films and documentaries. He received international acclaim after directing films such as Rekava, Gamperaliya, Nidhanaya, Golu-hadawatha, Kaliyugaya, Awaragira and Yuganthaya.His movie Wekande Walauwa, starring Ravindra Randeniya and Malini Fonseka, was Sri Lanka’s first ever submission for the Academy Awards.   


He is survived by his wife Sumithra Peiris who is also an acclaimed film producer and director.
