Workers Day Main rallies on May 7

Labour or Workers Day 2018 is being marked by some political parties and trade unions celebrating it on a low key today while holding their main rallies on May 7 because of the Vesak week from April 29. 

The government postponed Labour Day to May 7 on a request made to President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe by the Chief Prelates of Four Nikayas.  


The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) will hold its main May Day rally led by the President at Chenkalady in Batticaloa on May 7 while having photographic exhibition at the BMICH depicting the life and work of SLFP leaders like T.B. Illangaratne, Alavi Moulana, Ananda Dassanayaka, Bharatha Premachandra and several others. The photographic exhibition is to be opened by the President.   


The United National Party (UNP) will hold its May Day rally at the Sugathadasa Stadium on May 7 with the joint opposition-affiliated SLPP holding theirs at Galle. The JVP will hold its rally in Jaffna.   


The left Trade Union Alliance led by Communist Party General Secretary D.E.W. Gunasekara will hold its May Day rally today at Shalika Hall, Narahenpita.
