Referring to President Maithripala Sirisena’s decision to appoint the new Cabinet in a scientific manner, Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) leader and MP Udaya Gammanpila said Cabinet portfolios should be assigned not in scientific manner but in a logical manner.

He told a news conference that the President and the Prime Minister had failed to appoint Cabinet ministers in a proper manner.

“There have been four Cabinet reshuffles resulting in nothing but confusion. In 2015, the Central Bank which was under the Finance Ministry was assigned to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. In 2015, a meaningless ministry named Ministry of Higher Education & Highways was created. In 2017, the Lottery Board was assigned to the Foreign Ministry.

These appointments show that the President and the Prime Minister had failed to appoint an effective Cabinet,” the MP said.

He said there was no split in the JO though contrary ideas had been expressed by different members in JO in relation to the JVP proposal to abolish the executive presidency.

“Although some JO members are in favour of abolishing the executive presidency while some others are not, we will arrive at a consensus when JO meet,” the MP said.
