The Colombo Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayarathne yesterday allowed the FCID to examine the Bank accounts of former Governor of the Central Bank Ajith Nivard Cabraal over the alleged financial irregularity amounting to Rs 600 million caused on account of holding the Commonwealth Games festival.

The Magistrate also ordered the former Governor to provide the FCID with a statement regarding the above.  The Magistrate made this order in accepting a request made by the FCID claiming that investigations are being conducted on the alleged financial irregularity amounting to Rs 600 million caused, under the pretext of launching a project to obtain support from the other countries in holding the Commonwealth Games in Sri Lanka.

The police submitting a progress report on the investigations conducted over this incident, stated that with the idea of holding the Commonwealth Games in Sri Lanka in 2018, this amount of funds had been used in 2014 to canvass support from other countries, which did not derive any benefit as finally the games were held in Australia. Therefore, the police insisted that they examine the Bank accounts of the former governor in order to ascertain what happened to this money.
