Beruwela gem robbery Suspect identified, four remanded

The main suspect in the robbery of gems valued Rs. 8 million belonging to a gem merchant in Beruwela was identified by the witnesses at the identification parade held at the Kalutara Magistrate’s Court.


The suspect, with three other suspects in custody with the incident, was remanded till May 21 by Kalutara Addl. Magistrate Chandima Edirimanna.


Another suspect was released on personal bail of Rs. 200,000.


The Police told the court that the suspect had waylaid and robbed the gem merchant at gun point when he was on his way to gem market at Pattakade in Beruwela.


OIC Beruwala Police IP Janaka Vithanage, and SI Chandrana Thennakoon produced the suspect in court and made submissions.


Attorneys at Law Kanishka Wanniarachchi, Bevin Kumarasiri, Jagath Biyianwila, Asela Kularatne, and Ruwani Priyangika watched the interests of the aggrieved party, while Sanka Almeida, Thusita Dissanayake, and Anusha Jayalath appeared for the suspects.
